Cheap DIY Garage Door Makeover
Before

When we bought our French Country Cottage fixer-upper a little over a year ago one of the first things we did was update the exterior.
Which translated into removing approximately 1,412 bushes. So.Many.Bushes.
Other exterior updates included replacing the front door and shutters, changing the accent color to a gorgeous French blue, and installing the amazing and FREE solar system from Trinity Solar.

The garage door was the easiest of all these exterior renovations. Follow along to learn how you can update your garage door too!

#1. Paint

The first and easiest update is to paint the garage door.
I personally recommend painting it white if it isn’t already. Wipe it down really well then paint. My favorite is “Simply White” by Benjamin Moore.

#2. Attach the magnetic hardware.

At this house, I used these faux magnetic windows and then this magnetic carriage-style accent trim.
If your garage door does not have panels like our second fixer-upper, then you can just use the carriage-style accent trim as I did below.

Here is our second fixer-upper with just the carriage-style accents on the garage door.

If you have a paneled garage door as we do on this house, then I recommend adding the faux windows in addition to the carriage-style accents.

#3. Remove any access hardware.

We haven’t removed this lock yet, but we replaced the automatic garage door opener with this budget-friendly garage door opener.
At both houses, after I removed the hardware, I patched the small hole in the garage door with DryDex spackle, lightly sanded it, and then painted over.
