How to Make a Pallet Mug Rack in 3 Easy Steps

Learn how to make a pallet mug rack in 3 easy steps with this DIY tutorial and add farmhouse charm to any kitchen!

If you followed along with our French Country Cottage fixer-upper, then you probably remember the massive amount of pallet wood that I found for $5/pallet at one of our local grocery stores.

That’s my man. 

Spending his afternoon loading a gazillion pallets into a mini-van for his wife while I took pictures.

This pallet mug rack can be added to any upper kitchen cabinet, and listen, it is EASY. If you have one upper kitchen cabinet with an exposed side, want to add some farmhouse charm, and happen to love coffee, then this project is for you!

How to Make a Pallet Mug Rack in 3 Easy Steps

This was our coffee bar.

For reference the upper cabinet resting on the countertop is 42″ high.  The glass pane cabinet at the top is 12″ high with a spacer between the two cabinets.

This project will work for ANY kitchen cabinet – 30″, 36″, or 42″.

I was so excited to add a pallet mug rack here, but I didn’t want the bulky ones that I saw all over Pinterest.

Let’s get started!

 

How to Make a Pallet Mug Rack in 3 Easy Steps

Tools You Will Need:

• Pallet wood
• Hooks
• Measuring tape and pencil
• Brad nailer or drill
• 1-inch brad nails or 1 inch flat screws
• Cute coffee sign (see a list of cabinet size coffee signs at the end!)

 

How to Make a Pallet Mug Rack in 3 Easy Steps

#1.  Cut the pallet wood to 11 1/4″.

This will allow it to fit perfectly on the side of a standard upper cabinet. You can use a hand saw even to make this cut.

The beauty of pallet wood is that it is perfect in its imperfection.  Cut away.

To determine how many you need, measure the height of your cabinet and divide by 8.  For mine 42 inches divided by 8 is 5 plus change = 5 boards!

#2. Attach the hooks.  

I used these copper hooks from Amazon. 

Super cute.  Super cheap.

Lay the measuring tape across and set the hooks at 2 1/2 inches and 8 3/4 inches. 

This allows for the perfect amount of space between each mug.

Mark the holes with a pencil so you can line them back up easily.

Screw them in with the screws included with the hooks.

 

How to Make a Pallet Mug Rack in 3 Easy Steps

#3.  Add the pallet boards to your cabinet!

Place the first board near the top of your cabinet, but obviously not so high you cannot reach it.

I used our amazing Ryobi battery-powered brad nailer to anchor the boards.

The boards only hold 2 mugs each so it is not a significant amount of weight.

I nailed each board 6 times.  All 4 corners and then 2 in the center.

You can also use 1″ antique brass or bronze flat screws and use your drill.  If doing that I would only put two in the middle.

I use this brad nailer ALL THE TIME!  Love that it’s cordless.  It is so easy to use, and you would be amazed at how much easier it makes for lots of small (and large) house projects!

 

And there is your first board!

To add the rest simply take your tape measure and from the top of the first board, mark a line at 7 3/4 inches and that will be the top of your next board.

Attach the next board and continue until you have placed all 5 boards or however many you want to add!

I found that 7 3/4 inches give the perfect amount of space between the rows of mugs.

And you did it!!  Add a cute coffee sign and voila!  I found mine on eBay.

A note – if you are adding a sign make sure you account for that space when figuring out how many boards you want!

All of these cute coffee signs will fit on the side of a kitchen cabinet!
